East Berlin & the Cold War

Berlin became ground zero during the Cold War. Literally two countries on different sides of the road. With two conflicting ideologies, Communism versus Capitalism. We will journey first through the city centre to Checkpoint Charlie where I will draw you a detailed chronological map explaining the how's and why's of the Berlin Wall. I will take you through old East Berlin pointing out sites of attempted and successful escapes to the West. We will also discuss what challenges the old East still faces, and how it is being affected by the recent gentrification of the Eastern suburbs. We will end the tour with a beer at the longest remaining portion of the Berlin Wall, the East-Side Gallery.
